Frequently Asked Questions
What is your return policy?
Due to the nature of freshly roasted coffee we can’t accept any returns once you’ve received your shipment. We do however deeply care about getting things right so please reach out if there is any issue with your coffee and we will make it right.
What is a coffee's process?
When coffee is harvested, the producer has to dry the coffee beans. Put simply there are three main parts to a fresh coffee berry: the outer skin (shell), the mucilage (sticky membrane), and the bean.
The process refers to how the beans are dried. The 3 most common processes are: natural/dry, washed/wet, or honey.
Natural/Dry: The beans are left to dry whole, typically in the sun. This imparts some deeper dried fruit flavors and lend to more complex flavors.
Washed/Wet: The beans are dehulled and washed with water before drying. This is what you think of with a traditional coffee. Clean, subtle, and more straight foraward.
Honey: The outer skin is removed but some percentage of the mucilage is left in tact during drying. This is balance between natural and dry process and can be manipulated depending on how much mucilage is left on the beans while drying.
Why do some bags seem more full than others?
Coffee is a plant that is grown in many different regions of the world. There are variations in denisty and water content in every bean. This can even change from harvest to harvest.
Additonally, each roast drives a certain amount of water out of each bean during the journey from green bean to roasted coffee.
Due to the variation in shape, water content, and size of each bean, 12 ounces of one coffee may look very different than another. This is especially true of coffees with a darker roast and therefore less water content.
All of our coffees are weighed and bagged using a trade certified scale to ensure you are getting exactly what you pay for.
Why are the prices different for different coffees?
Our coffees are sourced from growers around the world. Different processes, varietals, and individual lots of coffee, demand different wholesale prices.
To give a consistent choice, we have created our Factorial Blends. Our light & bright and dark & bold blends will always be an affordable option at $19 per 12 ounce bag.
Two other factors in pricing are roast level and micro-lots.
Espresso and darker roasts drive out more moister during the roasting process. This equates to more loss and a slightly higher price.
Micro-lots are extremely special coffees that are available in limited releases. These tend to demand a higher price and would only be featured in our single origin section.
